Have you ever thought that our society is made up of a whole bunch of people performing jobs that don’t really need doing? Bullshit jobs, as they often have been labelled, were created simply to keep people working. But why does capitalism, a system which is supposed to be highly efficient (https://youtu.be/JFieXFWotIc), allow people to get paid for tasks that don’t need doing? How to Identify Bullshit Jobs In my opinion, there are three types of jobs. Vital jobs. These jobs are necessary or highly valued by society. If these jobs were to be destroyed, society would simply not function ... Necessary jobs that could be automated. There are lots of jobs people are doing now that are important, but could easily be automated ... Bullshit jobs. These are the jobs that society doesn’t really need. If they disappeared tomorrow, society would still function ... The Ruling Elite Want It This Way Capitalism, in theory, would not allow all these bullshit jobs to come into existence. However, reality proves otherwise. Obviously a business doesn’t want to pay for workers that aren’t doing anything valuable for their company. Just think of all the paper-pushers in every government department, or the number of managers in a company’s IT section (I know – I’ve worked in IT). It just doesn’t make sense. However, if you consider the desires of the ruling class, then it makes perfect sense. ... Politicians have come up with lots of ways to keep people working in their bullshit jobs, even if it involves getting people to spend most of their waking hours doing something that is meaningless. The elite have even convinced us that subjugating ourselves to the daily grind is somehow righteous. The unemployed are looked down upon. People who don’t actively seek employment are considered lazy and not deserving of any of the benefits of capitalism. Is There Hope? Of course there is hope. Technology is quickly replacing jobs no matter how defiant the ruling class may be (https://youtu.be/sZbUgsD3xAw). Eventually all dirty, dangerous and demeaning jobs will be automated. Although they’re trying their damnedest, there’s nothing that the rich can do about it, except possibly slow down its imminent arrival. The sharing economy is already under way. Services such as Uber and Airbnb are rewriting the rules of capitalism. Governments are madly trying to ban them (yes, Uber is illegal in Queensland - Note: early in 2016 it was illegal, however, now it is legal http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/anger-as-queensland-parliament-blocks-uber-emails-20160422-god9y4.html), but ultimately the will of the people will prevail. People do not want to be dictated to any more. If I want to stay at a stranger’s house, I should be allowed to. If I want to jump in a stranger’s car to take me to the supermarket, that’s my prerogative. Let’s face it, many people are already only working 15 hours a week, even if their job description says otherwise. When I was working in IT, most people only worked a couple of hours a day. (See my post on full-time work https://youtu.be/KvKfWum8des) The rest of the time was spent in meetings, or “training” sessions, or taking part in “team-building” exercises, or going out and having a coffee. The whole point of employment, at least in the eyes of our rulers, is that we are off the street for eight to 10 hours a day. My prediction is that work will not be seen as the be-all and end-all, and money will lose its power. Corporate lawyers and stock traders will be lost in the annals of history. Doing a job just to make money will be seen as backward and unproductive in modern society. Bullshit jobs will be eliminated. Helping out at the local aged-care facility will be seen as truly noble. Artists and poets will become important again, not because they will be earning lots of money, but because they are creating something beautiful. I say, let the robots do all the laborious and bullshit jobs. Us humans can focus more on using our creativity, coming up with new ideas, helping people, and having more leisure time to spend with our family and friends. Here's a quote by anthropologist David Graeber regarding bulllshit jobs: "Huge swathes of people, in Europe and North America in particular, spend their entire working lives performing tasks they secretly believe do not really need to be performed. The moral and spiritual damage that comes from this situation is profound. It is a scar across our collective soul. Yet virtually no one talks about it."
